Cape Town, with a wider Winelands option

Self-catering wedding venues in Cape Town: check what you can bring

What ‘self-catering’ means for the reception, and the work and costs to check before choosing it.

‘Self-catering wedding venue’ can mean permission to choose an outside caterer. It can also mean a largely empty venue where you arrange furniture, staff and services. Self-catering accommodation on the property is a separate issue and does not establish either reception arrangement.

These examples distinguish those options. Rondekuil and Welgemeend are in the Cape Town area; La Ferme is a wider Winelands alternative outside Franschhoek. We checked their official details on 14 October 2026.

Venue options to explore

Rondekuil: outside catering with preparation conditions

Rondekuil offers its own catering and a self-catering arrangement. Its wedding page specifies off-site food preparation for that option and says the caterer must bring equipment such as chafing dishes and utensils. Do not assume the venue provides a fully equipped production kitchen.

Ask your caterer to review the restrictions before paying a venue deposit. Get the facilities and service charge, what staff it covers, kitchen access and equipment inventory in one written scope. A venue that permits outside catering can still charge for the facilities needed to serve it.

Read Rondekuil’s official self-catering conditions.

Welgemeend: an outside caterer and a kitchen facility fee

Welgemeend’s FAQ permits an outside caterer, with a kitchen facility fee. It also states that staff hours are excluded from venue hire. Keep this hire-only arrangement separate from its wedding package, which has its own inclusions.

Ask what kitchen equipment is available and which serving, cleaning and bar staff you must arrange. Confirm who handles deliveries and clears the venue, and whether setup and breakdown add payable hours.

Check Welgemeend’s official hire FAQ.

La Ferme: a shell option outside Franschhoek

La Ferme explicitly describes a self-catering option using your own caterer and wedding planner or event manager. Its listed shell arrangement includes the hall, lawn and other facilities, with additional kitchen charges mentioned. Ask for an itemised current scope to resolve exactly what access and equipment the kitchen charge buys.

The same page contains package rates that expired on 31 December 2025 and different capacity statements: 80 to 100 in the overview and 90 in the hall-only section. We have not used those expired prices as current offers. Request a fresh quote and a layout confirming your seated count, especially if you are near the listed limits.

Read La Ferme’s official venue and self-catering descriptions. It is outside Franschhoek, not a Cape Town metro venue.

Give the caterer a venue checklist

  • Food: where preparation, cold storage, reheating and service are permitted, and which facilities are available.
  • Equipment: ovens, refrigeration, sinks, electrical supply, serving dishes and a written inventory of what must be hired.
  • People: cooks, waiters, bar staff, cleaning, security and a person responsible for coordinating them.
  • Access: delivery route, setup hours, waste removal and the deadline for collecting hire items.
  • Permissions: supplier approval, outside drinks, corkage and any restrictions stated in the contract.

Compare the assembled wedding with a package

Add hire, catering, equipment, staffing, transport, coordination and any compulsory accommodation before comparing totals. Consider the organising work as well as money: someone needs to manage deliveries, communicate changes and resolve a missing item on the day.

Ask the venue and caterer to confirm their responsibilities in writing. When one assumes the other supplies a service, the gap belongs in your plan before it becomes an expense during setup.

Turn your shared brief into three venue options

For a one-off R299, Vowspan personally researches three real Western Cape venues around both partners’ preferences and shared wedding brief. We contact venues for pricing, so you don’t have to.

Confirm final availability, inclusions and booking terms directly with the venue. The shortlist does not reserve a date.
